View Facebook Fan Comments

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Does your business have a Facebook fan page? Have you ever look at your Facebook Fan page wall and wondered where all you Facebook friends comments have gone? The comments may seem like they have disappeared from view. Do not worry. The comments are not gone forever.

Here is how you can view these comments.

Log in to Facebook and navigate to your Fan page. In the middle of the page under the “What’s on your mind” status box, you will see the options where you can select the type of comments you would like to see on this page.

Choose to view comments from:

  • Wall owner
  • Friends
  • Wall owner and friends

The choice is yours. Modify your page settings to select the view option that works best for you.

Here is a short video where you can see how I change the page settings to view my friends comments on my CyberLife Tutors Facebook Fan page. Stop by our Facebook Fan page and say hello or leave a comment.

Find Us on Facebook Badge

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

How can you create a custom Facebook Badge for your Facebook profile, Facebook photos, Facebook “likes” or Facebook Page? Let Facebook help you.

Membership in Facebook grows every day. Your customers are out there and they want to connect with you. Make it easy for them to find you on Facebook and connect with you there.

Follow the directions on Facebook badge page to create the custom design of your choosing. Your badge can include your name, picture, recent status updates, number of friends and more. You can even customize the shape of your badge – taller or wider based on your preferences and where you plan to place the badge.

Why add the Facebook badge to your website or blog? To make it easy for others to find your Facebook page, find out more about you. They may even add you as a friend.

When they click on the badge, they go directly to your Facebook page.

Chicago Blackhawks Tweet

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

According to a Daily Herald report this week, Chicago’s Blackhawks pro hockey team are tweeting to their fan base. Over 30,000 followers to the @NHLblackhawks use the site to keep up with the latest news. The Blackhawks team is owned by the Wirtz family which turned to Twitter and Facebook as a way of connecting with their younger fans. Their current Facebook fans number over 200,000 and continue to grow.

Rocky Wirtz heads up the organization, infusing new techniques his father William shied away from. The Blackhawks social networking presence connects them with new fans and increases interest in the club.

The Hawks could learn a few things from other Chicago Sports teams. Ozzie Guillen, White Sox manager uses Twitter to communicate. Recent posts include updates on his trip to Six Flags and a remembrance of a good friend who passed away. He tweets to followers in both English and Spanish.

Got Passion for a Non Profit

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Got Passion? Use social networking to promote a non profit. Giving back to your  community allows your skills to benefit others and while you demonstrate your expertise. Volunteering can expand your network and build credibility.

Are you on the board of your Chamber of Commerce? Do you have a passion for a community group or humanitarian cause? Are you involved with organizing a fund raising program? Is there a need to get the word out about an upcoming local event?

Did you know you can use social networking to market your organization and activities? You can use popular tools to give more visibility to your clubs, organizations or events. Here are four tips you can use:

  • Know your audience. What type of person is also interested in this activity or cause? Identify who you want to attract to your group or event. Where do they live? What age are they? What are they passionate about?
  • Know where your audience gathers. Once you know who you want to attract, you can determine which social networking tools are best for your needs. Social networking tools like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter serve different audiences and needs.
  • Create interesting content. Post educational, enlightening or entertaining text, pictures, audio or video on one or more selected social networking sites.
  • Attract connections. Get the word out by connecting with your target audience. If they find your content interesting, they will share it with others. As you create relationships with others, you will build an audience who wants to hear your message.

Last weekend I attended  an Earth month celebration at the Waikiki Aquarium. I heard about the activities and free admission through a Twitter message. At 9AM the line to get into the building was several hundred feet long. Social networking was a part of the aquarium’s marketing toolkit.

You can leverage the power of social media tools to let others know about your organization and activities. When your group has a presence on popular social media sites, your initiative will get noticed by your ideal audience. You can generate more exposure for your clubs, organizations or events by promoting them online.

On April 30, 2010 I will be speaking to a group at Harper College about volunteering as a way to move your career forward.

I Don’t Need Social Networking

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Social networking has been embraced by some businesses. Others are taking a “wait and see” attitude while still others are not interested in getting involved. Here are six reasons business owners tell me they are not using social networking, and my responses.

* I have run my business just fine without social networking.

Yes. We did fine before cars and refrigerators also. New fangled things can make our life easier. The world is evolving and your audience is moving to social networking sites. Go where your audience is.

* These sites are just for kids.

Who is your target audience? There are 400 million active users on Facebook. If only 1% of these members are your target audience – that is still a lot of people. “Facebook saw a 276% growth in 35-54 year old users.” Almost 38 percent of LinkedIn and 23% of Twitter users earn more than $100,000 a year.” says IStrategy Labs.

* What’s in it for me?

Your audience is there and they are talking about you. Listen to what they are saying. People believe online reviews to be true. Be responsive and contribute to the conversation.

* It will take too much time.

Yes, if you are lured into Mafia Wars or Bejeweled, you can spend much of your day on these sites. My advice – stay away from these distractions. Get your feet wet then create a plan to achieve your goals. You can easily manage your social networking strategy in less than 15 minutes a day.

* Social networking costs too much money.

Did I mention that most of the features on these sites are free? Search engines love the frequently updated content on these sites. The value of FREE Google search results? Priceless.

* I do not know how to get started.

Start small with just one of these tools. Find a mentor or teacher to get you started.

I will be teaching classes on social networking for business at the Shah Center in McHenry on Wednesdays April 27 – May 18. Learn how LinkedIn, Facebook, blogs and Twitter can build your bottom line. Details.
