It’s Probably Just a Fad

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

This week I collaborated with local technology geeks on our fall line up for a networking group we lead. One of the topics we considered is a social media experts panel. The group wondered if this was an over done or a worn out topic. My feedback is that I still talk to people who have never heard of the most popular social media tools or understand how they can be used in a career. I believe there is still interest and need for these topics.

You told me in our recent survey that you would like to learn more about social media and how to use these tools effectively in your career.

Not everyone thinks that social media is here to stay. My Dad has never touched a computer and still hangs on to the hard cover encyclopedia in case the internet is just a fad. He reads my weekly newsletters – his friend prints these out and hands him the paper copy when they go golfing. Hi Dad and Wayne!

After our discussion, one of my team mates sent me a link to this video. Not sure where they got the facts buy I agree that social media has changed the way we interact. I know my network is now bigger and more geographically dispersed as I use online tools. The ebook I’ll publish later this month has 16 co-authors from as far away as Hawaii and England. With tools like Skype, LinkedIn, Facebook and Youtube we easily collaborate. I participate in the monthly Social Media Club Hawaii though a live feed.

This video has interesting statistics including that if Facebook were a country, it would be the 4th largest in the world. Let me know what you think of this video.
