Lessons Learned from Author John D. Brown

This month I attended the Romance Writers of America Heart of the West conference in Park City, Utah. I was invited to speak on social networking for writers: Connect with Write Stuff.

John D. Brown gave the Friday evening keynote titled “Lessons on Story from the Hunger Games“. During his 10 lessons, John reminds us that our book, product or service may not be right for everyone. Or, you can’t please all the people all the time.

Connect with the Write Stuff at Heart of the West Utah RWA

I was excited to speak at the Utah Romance Writers of America Heart of the West conference in Park City. Many authors have a Facebook page or Twitter account though are not sure what to do next. That’s the question my session answered. I covered four topics: Strategy, Implementation, Engagement and Management. Feel free to view my presentation “Connect with the Write Stuff” and Connect with Write Stuff handout.

Rock the World with your Online Presence book

Mike O’Neil knows how to Rock the World with your Online Presence: Your Ticket to a Multi-Platinum LinkedIn Profile 2nd Edition with music and LinkedIn. I picked up new techniques on updating my profile while reading a promotional copy of the book. Mike and his co-author Lori Ruff weave the solid advice on building a strong LinkedIn profile with classic rock songs.

The book walks the reader through each element of a LinkedIn profile starting at the top. Chapter by chapter, you will learn how to maximize the law of attraction to let others find you online. Using screen shots, examples and tips, these authors start with strategy then get to the details. Mike and Lori focus on the hard tactics which make all the difference online.

Their tips on creating an attention getting LinkedIn profile headline include keyword search strategies, number of characters allowed (120) and using market test strategies.

The power of keywords is a feature often overlooked by LinkedIn users. Mike and Lori show you how to enter keywords in the best segments of your profile so they become searchable by others.

This book is about LinkedIn though there is references to integrate LinkedIn with other tools. The importance of status updates is discussed and links to Twitter updates as well. They discuss the recently added LinkedIn status functionality which allows an instant update to your linked Twitter account.

Their suggestions for giving and receiving professional recommendations are right on. With 3-5 sentences, you can get to the point and make your case. They show you how to make it easy for others to recommend your work.

Linkedin regularly changes the user interface or adds new features. To keep the book current, there is a website where updates and additional content are posted.

Check out this book if you are ready to dive in to create a LinkedIn profile that “Rocks the World.”

Making the Most of Your Mentoring Relationship Report

Mentoring is a two way relationship which can be a gift to both parties.

Merriam Webster says the root of the word mentor comes from the Greek Mentor, a friend of Odysseus entrusted with the education of Odysseus’ son Telemachus. In our business world, we refer to the dictionary’s second definition: a mentor is a trusted counselor, guide, tutor, coach.

Over my career I have been a mentor and mentee. Sometimes, both roles at the same time. Sometimes mentors were much like me and other times they had a different approach to business. Each type had its benefits.

Find Your Passion for Life

Several years ago, I was working at a large corporation and found I had lost my passion for my job. I lost my passion for the work I was doing and dreaded the 2 1/2 to 4 hours a day commute. My efforts seemed futile and felt unrewarding. I thought there must be more to my career and life.

Over the next several months my life began to change. Both Internal and external forces shifted opening doorways to a radically different career and life style for me. I said “goodbye” to 4 hour commutes and the corporate world. It was “hello” to self employment, new clients and partners.

Through this transformation, people noticed how excited and passionate I was about my work. They were excited too. I collected my thought in an essay which started the “Ignite Your Passion” book. The anthology brings together the stories of 17 people who have found their passion for their careers.

Where Are You Today Video Podcast

Where Are You Today?” is the name of our podcast series published on our travel blog and  YouTube. My husband is the Executive Producer for these episodes and we have fun filming and producing the scenes.

One of my students walked into my “Facebook for Business” class yesterday and said “I did not know how much fun Social networking can be!” We do find social networking fun as we blend both our business and personal life online.

My husband and I enjoy traveling locally and afar. On our adventures we bring a video camera to shoot footage at the places we visit. We especially like finding out of the way treasures. Having the video camera with us gives us the ability to be spontaneous and take advantage of the moment.

When we get home, Noel transforms the bits and bytes into three – five minute segments we publish in our “Where Are You Today?” YouTube video podcast series.

Enjoy viewing these “Where Are You Today?” segments.

Interview with the Author

When D’vorah Lansky asked be to be a guest on Relationship Marketing Cafe, I jumped at the chance. On Monday April 28, 2010 I was a guest of relationship marketing expert D’vorah Lansky on her podcast The Blog Station.

Back when D’vorah initally launched her podcast, I was honored to be her first guest on the show. Two years later, I was delighted to be invited back for a repeat visit. As a guest, I am in good company. Industry experts from around the country have been guests on the show.

D’vorah and I initially met through a LinkedIn discussion group. We traded emails back and forth before moving our conversation to the telephone. Over the years we developed a mutually beneficial business relationship. D’vorah is a co-author in the “Ignite Your Passion” book.

Do not worry if you missed the call. You can listen to the recorded session for tips on how to grow your business.
